What Are HCS Respite Services?
Temporary Support When Caregivers Need Relief
HCS respite services provide short-term support when an individual’s primary caregiver is temporarily unavailable or needs planned relief from caregiving responsibilities.
Respite may include assistance with personal care, meals, mobility, medication-related needs, supervision, daily living activities, and participation in community or leisure activities, depending on the individual’s approved HCS service plan.
Respite may be provided in the individual’s home or in another approved setting, depending on the type of respite authorized and HCS program requirements.
The goal is to give caregivers temporary relief while ensuring the individual continues to receive safe, appropriate, and familiar support.
What Are TxHmL Respite Services?

TxHmL respite services provide short-term support when an individual’s regular caregiver is temporarily unavailable or needs relief from caregiving responsibilities.
In-home respite may include assistance with personal care, meals, housekeeping, health-maintenance tasks, and other daily living activities while the caregiver is away. Services are provided according to the individual’s approved TxHmL plan and program requirements.
The goal is to give caregivers temporary relief while ensuring the individual continues to receive the support needed to remain safe, comfortable, and active in daily life.
One difference worth keeping in mind: TxHmL specifically recognizes in-home respite, and HHSC requires that in-home respite be provided in the individual’s residence.
